Lil Wayne Wears Womens Clothes
Lil Wayne Wears Womens ClothesAug. 28, 2011, Lil Wayne performs at the MTV Video Music Awards in Los Angeles. Rap acts like Kanye West and Lil Wayne have taken to wearing women's clothing.

Lil Wayne jumped around in skinny women’s pants during his performance at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. Kanye West wore a multiprint shirt designed for women at the Coachella music festival. Kid Cudi has been seen in a plaid skirt, Snoop Dogg often wears jewelry designed for women, and Pharrell Williams is a fan of the Hermes-made Birkin bag, the ultra-expensive purse favored by Hollywood’s top actresses.

Elena Kiam, the owner and creative director of the jewelry brand Lia Sophia, says initially she was surprised to see her women’s line embraced by some of rap’s top acts like 50 Cent, P. Diddy and Snoop Dogg, who has worn her pieces in music videos and on magazine covers.

“When we were designing these really beautiful, sparkly necklaces, we thought more for top editors, maybe a celebrity movie star. We really weren’t thinking about hip-hop,” said Kiam, who also said Beyoncé, Rihanna and Miley Cyrus have worn her designs.

“There was a rapper wearing the same piece as a soccer mom from Ohio,” she added.

Celebrity stylist June Ambrose says those multiplatinum musicians can pull it off because their personas stretch beyond the hip-hop culture. Of Lil Wayne’s much-talked about decision to sport a pair of boxer-revealing, black-and-white leopard print pants during the VMAs, she acknowledges his attire was “eccentric, but you know, he’s a rock star and pulls it off extremely well.

“Fashion should be as unisex as it is right now. It’s probably the most unisex we’ve seen it,” she said.
West, hip-hop’s ultimate metrosexual who will debut his own fashion collection in Paris next week, wore a flowing, long-sleeved women’s shirt designed by French-based fashion house Celine earlier this year at Coachella. Though there were some who poked fun at his clothing choice, Ambrose saw nothing wrong with it.

“I think it’s acceptable if you’re not wearing a pair of heels with it and you’re not wearing lipstick and neither of these guys did that,” said Ambrose, who has styled Jay-Z, Diddy and Will Smith. “They treat fashion like it is art.”

It’s not just rappers — Russell Brand and rockers like Steven Tyler and Pete Wentz have worn women’s clothes in the past; Janet Jackson says the famous sparkly black jacket Michael Jackson wore during his legendary “Motown 25″ performance was from his mother’s closet. And of course, androgyny has long been intertwined with pop, from David Bowie to Freddie Mercury to Prince (known for his trademark heels).

Bieber Wears Womens Jeans

Bieber, the 17-year-old pop phenomenon, acknowledges he has rocked women’s jeans because of their suitable fit.

“I think I’ve worn women’s jeans before because they fit me better,” he told The Associated Press at a recent fashion event. “I just think that whatever works, works.”

“It wasn’t like it looked like a woman’s sweater,” continued Bieber, referring to women’s shirt worn by West. “It was just a regular sweater that just happened to be a woman’s.”

Kanye West Crashes Paris fashion shows

    Amber Rose and Kanye West
Amber Rose and Kanye WestEarlier this week, they were spotted in these outfits at the Louis Vutton fashion show in Paris. The killing of God's creatures aside, the attire simply looks ridiculous, doesn't it?

Guess Kanye West only learned a bit from last March, when he was turned away at lots of Paris couture fashion shows because he hadn’t RSVP’d his attendance. The Chicago native and music superstar reportedly was stunned by the snubs.

However, along with being universally panned for his new Dw women’s fashion line (unveiled this past week in Paris), West reportedly still showed up at a number of other designer’s shows and events — again without saying he was coming.

While there were only a couple of outright turn-downs, West was allowed into most of the things he wanted to attend.

According to a source close to him, “People in Paris have come to realize that Kanye operates on a different wavelength. . . . He’s used to deciding on the spur of the moment about going to things — like he does in New York or Hollywood. So, unlike in March, things went a little more smoothly for him — except for how poorly his collection was received.

“In Paris or Milan — in the world of haute couture — things don’t work like that,” the source said. “Arranging the seating for those shows is planned for weeks, due to the pecking order designers assign to fashion world stars — from [Vogue editor] Anna Wintour all the way down.”

‘DANCING’ BONUS: Now that Kristin Cavallari has chatted about it, the “Dancing With the Stars” practice of paying contestants a “bonus” (reportedly a couple of thousand dollars) for celebrity guests they get to join the studio audience has been revealed.

Cavallari has been very vocal this week, saying what many people have long known: “DWTS” is as much a popularity contest as a dancing competition.

Those famous faces in the studio audience — like Cher, promised next week by son Chaz Bono — are thought to boost ratings.

JOBS FILM: Not surprisingly, the death of Steve Jobs has Hollywood buzzing about a film about his life, with the best bet being one based on former Time editor Walter Isaacson’s authorized Jobs biography. Now being rushed out Oct. 24, it includes hours of interviews with Jobs, his family, friends and Apple colleagues.

Hollywood pros say Isaacson stands to get one of the biggest film rights deals in history.

ROLLIN’ WITH ROSIE: A nice local touch for Rosie O’Donnell’s new talk show on OWN was revealed at a taping Thursday: Chicago’s own Nora Dunn, the actress and former “Saturday Night Live” star, is Rosie’s guest announcer. During the show opening, the two bantered and joked about menopause.

SAY BYE-BYE: Mt. Prospect’s own Lee DeWyze, “American Idol” season nine winner, received the bad news that he’s been dropped by his label, RCA Records. His debut album, last year’s “Live It Up,” sold a disappointing 168,000 copies. . . . Lame ratings for Hank Azaria’s “Free Agents” led the sitcom to be canceled Thursday by NBC after only three episodes.

DRINK THIS IN: Fans of Pharrell Williams may catch him around town Friday night — since the Grammy-winning artist will be here to promote his new, vodka-based cream liqueur, Qream With a Q.

MOVIE SCHMOOZE: The team responsible for “Munger Road,” the indie horror flick that’s generating good reviews and audience buzz — stars Bruce Davison, Randall Batinkoff and Trevor Morgan, plus writer/director Nick Smith and producer Kyle Heller — will on hand at 5 p.m. Friday for the 26th Scarecrow Festival in St. Charles.

SEEN ON THE SCENE: Before leaving town (now that hubby Eddie Cibrian’s “The Playboy Club” has been canceled), LeAnn Rimes lunched at Chicago Q, telling owner Fred Latsko she’ll help boost the upcoming launch of LA Q — the future Los Angeles outlet for his upscale barbecue eatery. . . . Ex-Hawks player and coach Denis Savard boosted fund-raising events for his charity foundation while taping a Comcast SportsNet “Chicago Huddle” interview at Casa Bonita Mexican Restaurant Tequila Bar. . . . Dennis Quaid hung out at Tavern on Rush while his “Heartland” co-star Heather Graham lunched at RL, where (separately) Roger Daltrey grabbed a quick bite. . . . RL also was the dinner choice for Chicago native Billy Zane, joined by girlfriend Candice Neill and their beautiful baby daughter, Ava Katherine.
